Beavers

Beaver Scouts are young boys and girls usually aged between six and eight years old. They belong to the first and youngest section in the scouting family.  Our colony is a friendly and active place for you child to join – we get up to all sorts of things, including day visits, sleepovers, arts and crafts, exploring the outdoors and much more!

The Beaver Scouts meet on a Monday evening from 5.45-7.00 during term time.

The Beaver Scout leader is Angie Vater.

Information for parents

Day to day information, including contact information for the leaders, and activity plans, will be provided via the online parent portal MyScout.

Joining

After a few weeks ‘trying us out’, your son and/or daughter will be invited to be invested as a Beaver Scout and to make their Beaver Scout Promise:

I promise to do my best
To be kind and helpful
And to love God.

The Beaver Scout Promise has a number of versions for various faiths and beliefs, or no faith or belief. This is to reflect the open welcome we give to all members of our community.

They will then be provided with their own Group Scarf (necker), woggle and the uniform badges (see below for where to affix them)  for the Group, District and County and their Purple ‘World Membership Badge’.

Fees

  • Joining fee: To cover the cost of Group Scarf (and woggle) provided by group on payment of £10 joining fee (one-off). This also covers the cost of the introductory badges.
  • Subscriptions (Subs): The ‘Scouting Year’ runs from Sept to August and the current annual subscription for all members of the 1st Forest Row Scout Group is £120 (payable annually or termly at £40). Nearly half of this amount goes to fund national, county and district levels of Scouting. The remainder funds activities and equipment, badges and awards, and contributes to the maintenance and upkeep of the Scout Hall.
  • By also registering for Gift Aid (if you pay income tax) the Group can claim back the tax on 28% of the subs, at no cost to you.
  • Special events, such as camps and nights away, trips and paid-for activities will be charged separately.

Payments should be made via the My.Scout online parent portal. Please ask if you need any assistance.

Uniform

Each member will need a uniform sweatshirt (Beavers or Cubs) or a long-sleeved uniform shirt (Scouts) as a minimum. Onto to this will be sewn/stuck various activity and proficiency badges. Other optional uniform (e.g. polo shirts) can be worn for activities.

All these can be purchased on line at the Scout Shop or from East Grinstead District Scout Shop

Our Beavers take part in lots of activities that go towards various “activity” and “challenge” badges. Please sew them onto the Beaver’s jumper when your Beaver is awarded with the badges. Below is a diagram showing where they should go.

More information about the badge system can be found on the scouts.org.uk website.
