Scouts is the third section in the scouting family, and is typically seen as the original section. Scouts are typically 10 1/2 to 14 years old. Scouts are at the age where they can experience the true adventure that scouting has to offer – from arts and crafts in the meeting place to jumping off cliffs, climbing, sailing, hiking, raft building and many more! We aim to give scouts a wide range of experiences so they can learn some new skills by accident along the way.
As an active Scout troop, we get up to all sorts of exciting and adventurous activities, both in our regular meetings and on camps and visits.
We have two Scout Troops in Forest Row.
- Monday night Scouts runs from 7.00-9.00 and is run by. Sarah Hume,
- Thursday night Scouts runs from 7.00-8.45 and is run by Mark Schons.
Information for parents
Day to day information, including contact information for the leaders, and activity plans, are provided via the online parent portal MyScout.
Joining
After a few weeks ‘trying us out’, your son and/or daughter will be invited to be invested as a Scout and to make their Scout Promise.
On my honour,
I promise that I will do my best
to do my duty to God and to The King
to help other people
and to keep the Scout Law
The Scout Promise has a number of versions for various faiths and beliefs, or no faith or belief. This is to reflect the open welcome we give to all members of our community.
They will then be provided with their own Group Scarf (necker), woggle and the uniform badges (see below for where to affix them) for the Group, District and County and their Purple ‘World Membership Badge’.
Fees
- Joining fee: To cover the cost of Group Scarf (and woggle) provided by group on payment of £10 joining fee (one-off). This also covers the cost of the introductory badges.
- Subscriptions (Subs): The ‘Scouting Year’ runs from Sept to August and the current annual subscription for all members of the 1st Forest Row Scout Group is £120 (payable annually or termly at £40). Nearly half of this amount goes to fund national, county and district levels of Scouting. The remainder funds activities and equipment, badges and awards, and contributes to the maintenance and upkeep of the Scout Hall.
- By also registering for Gift Aid (if you pay income tax) the Group can claim back the tax on 28% of the subs, at no cost to you.
- Special events, such as camps and nights away, trips and paid-for activities will be charged separately.
Payments should be made via the My.Scout online parent portal. Please ask if you need any assistance.
Uniform
Each member will need a uniform sweatshirt (Beavers or Cubs) or a long-sleeved uniform shirt (Scouts) as a minimum. Onto to this will be sewn/stuck various activity and proficiency badges. Other optional uniform (e.g. polo shirts) can be worn for activities.
All these can be purchased on line at the Scout Shop or from East Grinstead District Scout Shop.
Scouts have challenge badges, that work towards their Chief Scouts Gold badge, and over seventy activity badges that let them discover many new activities. If your scout is awarded a badge, please sew it on their shirt as shown below:
